Did Chris Pratt Alter His Mario Voice For The Super Mario Bros. Movie?

Mario Bros is one of the most iconic figures of modern pop culture. Since his first appearance, as a minor player character in a Donkey Kong game in 1981, Shigeru Miyamoto’s character has become one of the most popular videogame characters of all time. It’s no wonder, Nintendo decided to make a movie following the adventures of Mario and Luigi.
Everyone’s so used to Mario’s voice. After all, the way he sounds is just as iconic as his outfit or his mustache. That’s why everyone was so surprised last year when it was announced that Chris Pratt is set to voice Mario in Illumination Entertainment's upcoming animated movie. And now that the first trailer for the Super Mario Bros. Movie came out, fans were finally able to hear what Pratt sounds like as the iconic Italian plumber. Internet users from all over the world have had a lot to say about Mario’s new voice.
The Same Actor Has Voiced Mario For More Than 30 Years
Shigeru Miyamoto created Mario while developing a Donkey Kong game for Nintendo. Originally, Miyamoto wanted to use the characters from the animated series, Popeye.
But since he was unable to acquire a license to use those characters he decided to create an unnamed player character to go along with Donkey Kong. The character was named "Jumpman" in the game's instructions and "little Mario" in the sales brochures.
According to Miyamoto, Mario's profession was chosen to fit in with the game’s overall design. Since Donkey Kong takes place on a construction site, Mario was originally a carpenter. But when he appeared again in Mario Bros., he was made into a plumber because most of the game took place in underground settings.
Once Mario’s profession was determined, Miyamoto decided to “put him in New York” make him Italian. This had a huge impact on Mario’s appearance. And over time, Mario's appearance has changed to the character design we know and adore.
Mario’s iconic voice the creation of the prolific voice actor that has voiced the videogame character since the early 90s, Charles Martinet. He came up with the voice for Mario when auditioning for the role. Since then, the actor has voiced Mario, as well as other characters such as Wario, Luigi, Waluigi, Baby Luigi and Baby Mario in a variety of games.
The Super Mario Bros Movie Is Not The First Movie Starring Nintendo’s Most Popular Videogame Character
The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) is not the first movie or TV series inspired by this iconic videogame character. Since the early 80s, there have been dozens of animated series and movies, as well as live-action movie, inspired by Nintendo’s most popular videogame character. But it is probably the biggest attempt yet. This is the first 3D Mario movie and it has a cast full of A-list Hollywood actors.
The upcoming animated film, co-produced by Shigeru Miyamoto (creator of the Mario Bros. franchise) and Chris Meledandri (CEO of Illumination Entertainment), is set to be released on 2023. With Chris Pratt as the voice of the leading character, and Jack Black as Mario’s long-time rival, Bowser, the movie’s set up for great success.
Chris Pratt’s Mario Voice Sounds The Same As His Regular Voice, According To Fans
Since the release of the trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, fans seem disappointed over Chris Pratt’s Mario voice. The main concern is that Mario does not sound like himself and, instead, he sounds just like the Guardians the Galaxy actor.
Fans are upset that Pratt not only decided not to do an Italian accent for Mario, but also didn’t seem to alter his voice at all to give life to this iconic videogame character.
Fans aren’t the only ones unhappy with Pratt’s terrible voice acting. Voice actor, Tara Strong, has called out the producers of the newest Mario film on social media. “It should be Charles”, Strong wrote in the caption of a photo of her and Charles Martinet.
Strong then tweeted: “Voice actors: I’m gonna put my heart & soul in this for at least 20 years, help sell billions in merch, make the studios millions of dollars & make generations around the world happy. Hollywood: We don’t care.”
And fans couldn’t agree more. Since the release of the trailer, thousands of fans have called out the decision to cast Chris Pratt as Mario. Someone even edited Pratt out of the trailer!
